FREE ACT PASSAGE ANNOUNCEMENT

Dear family,

We DID IT YA’LL! We’re delighted to share the exciting news that the FREE Act HB 1268 has successfully passed the Senate and is now on its way to the Governor’s desk for signature. This remarkable achievement is a testament to your hard work, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the cause to eliminate permanent punishment laws in Illinois.

On behalf of our entire team, we extend our warmest congratulations to the directly impacted leaders, coalition partners, and supportive organizations who were involved in this significant milestone. Your tireless efforts in advocating have paid off and will impact an estimated 600,000 people with felony convictions.

The Free Act was intentionally introduced as our first piece of legislation to introduce the campaign, build a powerful coalition, and raise awareness around the impact of permanent punishment laws. The Coalition will now focus on wholesale legislative solutions such as the PIECE Act (Promoting Involvement & Empowerment Through Civic Engagement) which is seeking to eliminate 16 statutes that restrict people with felony convictions’ ability to engage civically in their local communities.

As we eagerly await the governor’s signature on the Free Act, it is essential to recognize the transformative potential of this legislation. It holds the promise of improving the quality of life for individuals, protecting rights, and fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. Your contribution to this endeavor has been invaluable, and your commitment to championing positive change is commendable.

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering dedication throughout this journey. Your advocacy, support, and persistence have Been instrumental in achieving this milestone. You have made a real difference in our community, and we are grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside you.

While we celebrate this victory, Let’s also acknowledge that our work is not yet complete. The implementation and enforcement of the Free Act will require continued collaboration and vigilance together. We must ensure that its provisions are effectively put into practice and that its intended impact is realized.

Once again, congratulations on this well-deserved success. We have no doubt that your passion, perseverance, and unwavering commitment will continue to drive positive change in our community. Please take a moment to celebrate this achievement and recognize the impact your efforts have had on the lives of many.
